Homes in Weatherford and what they ask of paint
Weatherford is one of the older towns in the region, and the blocks around the square include late Victorian, Queen Anne and early 1900s homes with wood lap siding, decorative brackets, beadboard porch ceilings and double-hung windows. Postwar neighborhoods add brick and frame ranches, while newer subdivisions on the edges of town are mostly brick and stone. For paint, the historic homes need patient scraping, lead-safe prep, oil primers on old wood and careful brush work on detail. Newer homes need the usual Texas trim care and color matching.
Repainting a Victorian near the Weatherford courthouse square
Old wood that has been painted many times often has layers that are failing at different depths. We start by testing for lead, since nearly every home of that age has some. Where it's present, we set up ground containment, wet scrape and hand sand rather than power sanding, and clean up with a HEPA vacuum.
Bare wood gets a slow-drying oil primer that soaks in and stabilizes the fibers. Cracks and open joints get a high-quality acrylic caulk, and brackets, spindles and trim are brushed by hand. We finish with two coats of a premium acrylic exterior paint, often in three or four colors to bring out the architecture.
- Lead test before any scraping
- Wet scraping and HEPA cleanup
- Oil primer on bare old-growth wood
- Hand-brushed brackets and spindles
Porches that need carpentry before paint
Wraparound and front porches on older Weatherford homes take more weather than any other part of the house. Column bases, bottom rails and floorboards near the steps are where rot usually starts. We replace soft pieces with matching profiles when possible, or use epoxy filler where only a small area is damaged.
Porch floors get a porch and floor enamel that handles foot traffic. Beadboard ceilings are often painted a soft sky blue, a tradition many Weatherford owners like to keep, and we can match the existing shade or suggest one.
Storefronts and small businesses on the square
Downtown Weatherford has brick storefronts with painted wood or metal trim, transoms and signage areas. We repaint door frames, window trim, cornices and back walls, and can schedule work early in the morning or on slower days so customers can still come in.
For interiors, we often paint retail spaces and restaurants after hours. Fast-drying, low-odor acrylics let the space reopen the next day.
